A Separate Toilet for a Transgender in Malappuram’s Government College

Recently, a government college in Kerala’s Mallapuram made a separate washroom for the only trans-woman student – Riya Isha.

Riya is Kerala’s first Muslim Trans-woman who got admitted in higher education.

The government of Kerala has started several initiatives to support the Transgender community; they range from higher education institutions to free sex change surgeries.

In a way, this state is doing a lot for a neglected transgender community. In this order, in Mallapuram of Kerala separate toilets were made for the only transwoman student Riya Isha in a government college recently.

Riya is the first Muslim transwoman of Kerala who enrolled in higher education institute for studies.

According to The News Minute, 27-year-old Riya felt that there should be a separate toilet for transgender people.

“There are many students whose thinking are very old and don’t want us to use the same toilet as them. Even, many girls turned to their eyes after seeing us, but there are many students who gave their full support as much as College administration has provided.”

The administration of the college mentioned that “there should be an unbiased support to each and every gender whether it’s a girl, boy or transgender.”

One of the organization said, “We had first demanded a separate toilet for Riya from the college administration, we are glad that the college has taken note of this.”

Economics student Riya said that this is a matter of safety and accessibility; she also mentioned that she is also very uncomfortable using the other washrooms.

Although this was not the first time Riya was seen by society from a different perspective.

When Ria resident of Kurachandu decided to come to Malappuram, her friends had advised her to go to Kochi as the number of transgender people in Kochi is high. But Riya decided to stay in Malappuram.

She says that people here should also know that transgender is not a crime and it is normal.
