To understand the present fame it is necessary to look back in the past to know how the seeds for this limelight were sowed.
The Institutes of Higher Learning, established post-independence could be credited to the esteem that Indian enjoy today. Although, India is yet to achieve 100% Literary rate, but looking back, India has come up a long way, from 18% Literacy rate in 1951 to 73% recorded literacy in the last census of 2011.
These Institutes, have helped India to make a mark all over the world and are recognized by the Government of India as Institute of National Importance (INI).
As of July 2021, India has 161 Institutes of National Importance under various Acts of Parliament. These INIs include 23 IITs, 15 AIIMSs, 20 IIMs, 31 NITs, 25 IIITs, 7 IISERs, 7 NIPERs, 5 NIDs, 3 SPAs, 2 NIFTEMs, 5 Central universities, 4 Medical research institutes, and 14 other specialized institutes.

In the Architecture field, Schools of Planning and Architecture (SPA) are recognized as Institutes of National Importance through the 'School of Planning and Architecture Act, 2014' and its subsequent amendments

Engineering and Technology
For the Engineering Steam, Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology(IIIT) and Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IEST) are recognized as the Insitute of National Importance.
Food Technology
National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) and Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT) are recongined as Institutes of National Importance through the National Institutes of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management Act, 2021.
