The tag ‘Institute of Eminence’ has not yet awarded to the Jio Institute says Javadekar

There was a controversy which came up while the Jio institute was allegedly awarded the ‘Institute of Eminence’ tag.

The Institute of Eminence has not been awarded to the institute yet, however.

Prakash Javedekar, the Union HRD Minister said that the government grant will not be given to any private institute when asked whether the Jio Institute will receive the government grant.

Over a period of five years, only public institutes will receive Rs 1,000 crore grants.

There were three public sector institutions, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore; Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and two private sector institutions Birla Institute of Technology & Sciences, Pilani and Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Karnataka apart from the Jio Institute.
 
Letter of Intent
  • Javadekar clarified that the 'Institution of Eminence' tag has not been issued to the yet-to-be-established Jio Institute
  • That because of their vision the institute has only been issued with a 'Letter of Intent,'
  • Two other institutions - BITS Pilani and Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal - from the private sector were issued Letter of Intents besides Jio Institute
  • under the Institutions of Eminence tag within three years of the LoI indicating their readiness for commencing the academic programmes, the Jio institute and Manipal Academy of Higher Education have been issued LOIs, with the condition that they would submit a report to the HRD Ministry
  • The letter of intent was issued by the Empowered Expert Committee and not by the HRD ministry, said Javadekar.
