Remembering the sacrifices made by the armed forces to protect the borders, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked universities to celebrate Surgical Strike Day on September 29.

A surgical strike is defined as a military attack intended to inflict damage on a specific target. On September 29, 2016, the Army announced that it had carried out surgical strikes across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir to target terrorists waiting at multiple launch pads to cross over into India.

The UGC has written to the Vice-Chancellors of all universities mentioning that students should pledge their support for the armed forces in writing that day.

“The students shall pledge their support for the armed forces by writing letters and cards, which may be produced in both physical and digital format,” pointed out the letter written by UGC to all universities.

However, Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar on Friday denied any political motive behind the move.
