All over India the classrooms are filled with greeting cards and flowers given by the students to their teachers to mark the day as ‘happy teacher’s day’.

This day is recognised as a day to celebrate the unique role and responsibilities which our teachers are doing each day.

But do you know what the actual history behind this day is. Read further to know more.

India celebrates teacher’s day on September 5 while the world celebrates on October 5.

In a bit to give a tribute to Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan who was a great teacher, philosopher and statesman.

Radhakrishnan was the second president of our country from 1962 to 1967. Before that from 1952 to 1961 he was the first vice president of India.

He taught in Chennai’s Presidency College and also in Calcutta University.

From 1931 to 1936 he was a vice-chancellor of Andhra University.

In 1962, his birthday came to be observed as Teacher’s day instead as the students approached him for the permission to celebrate September 5 as a Teacher’s day to recognise the teachers of the society.
