An estimated 17 lakh people visited the 42nd International Kolkata Book Fair, the largest of its kind in the world in terms of visitors, in 12 days with Rs 16 crore sale of books registered till yesterday, the organisers said.
Despite the change in venue from more centrally located Milan Mela ground to the Central Park in Salt Lake this year, the sales figure was encouraging, the General Secretary of Publishers and Booksellers Guild, Tridib Chatterjee told a press meet here, on the last day of the Book Fair.
While last year Rs 20 Crore sale was registered in the 12-day book fair, "We are hopeful of reaching last year's target or near the target in the next few hours which can be calculated tomorrow," Chatterjee said.
The 17 lakh people count was made possible by the digital sensor installed at every entrance of the fair by Bidhanagar Police.
He said the name of the theme country for the 43rd edition of the International Kolkata Book Fair, 2019 has not been decided yet.
