The counselling for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET UG was on Saturday deferred until further notice. “NEET UG counselling deferred until further notice: Official sources,” posted news agency ANI on X, formerly Twitter.

This comes amid allegations of irregularities, including of paper leak, in the NEET exam. NEET UG counselling, conducted in several stages, includes additional rounds for leftover seats and final rounds. Students, who pass the medical entrance exam,  need to register first, pay fees for the counselling, choose their preferences and finalise them, upload required documents, and physically go to their assigned institute.

The Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, is all set to consider several NEET UG 2024 petitions on July 8, 2024.

Scrapping the controversy-ridden NEET-UG 2024 examination would not be a rational step and “seriously jeopardize” lakhs of honest candidates who attempted the questions, the Centre told the Supreme Court on Friday.

In its affidavit submitted in response to a batch of petitions filed by candidates, coaching institutes, and parents of the NEET-UG aspirants, the Union Ministry of Education said the government has asked the CBI to conduct a comprehensive probe into the entire gamut of alleged irregularities.

“It is also submitted that at the same time, in the absence of any proof of any large-scale breach of confidentiality in a pan-India examination, it would not be rational to scrap the entire examination and the results already declared,” the Centre said.

It added that in any examination, there are competing rights that are created whereby the interests of a large number of students who have taken the examination without adopting any unfair means must not also be jeopardized.

While an official notification detailing the NEET UG counselling schedule is expected to be released shortly on the official website at mcc.nic.in, students and parents are advised to stay updated with official announcements regarding the rescheduling of NEET UG 2024 counselling dates.
