Muharram 2024: Schools and colleges to remain closed in Bihar, Kerala

Muharram, which marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year, is one of the sacred months in Islam. This year, Muharram falls on July 17. Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, begins on the evening of July 16, with observances continuing until the following day. According to reports, Bihar and Kerala have declared Muharram a mandatory public holiday. It is learnt that all educational activities will be suspended on July 17 and will resume the following day.

Bihar 

The state government has officially announced a holiday for schools and colleges on July 17 in observance of Muharram. While the initial date for the holiday was set for July 18, it has been rescheduled to July 17 due to the sighting of the moon. This holiday will be observed by all government and private schools, with classes resuming after the festival. The Education Department has issued a notice regarding the temporary closure of schools.

Kerala

The Kerala government has published the 2024 public holiday schedule, confirming that Muharram will be observed as a public holiday. In light of the festival, all schools and colleges will be closed on this day. However, the government has cautioned that the date is subject to change based on the sighting of the moon. Parents and students should contact the school officials for any updates regarding school closures, reopening, and additional information.
