  • First movement
For centuries, the British rule ruled India, but when the oppression of the British started increasing, protests started in different parts of the country. The first and biggest protest against the British East India Company and demanding independence was the Revolution of 1857. The fire of this revolution spread across the country and movements started all over the country.
 
  • First flag hoisting
On 15 August 1947, the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, hoisted the flag for the first time at the Red Fort. This tradition has continued every year since then and every Prime Minister hoists the flag at the Red Fort on this day and addresses the country.
 
  • Creation of the tricolor
The design of the Indian national flag was prepared by Pingali Venkaiah. The original design was presented to Mahatma Gandhi in 1921 and the current tricolor was adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India on 22 July 1947.
 
  • National flag
The saffron color included in the Indian national flag is a symbol of courage. The white color is a symbol of truth and peace. The green stripe symbolises fertility, growth and purity of the land. The Ashoka Chakra present in it has 24 spokes.
