The entire nation today mourns the demise of Chief of Defense Staff, CDS General Bipin Rawat who lost his life in a chopper crash on Wednesday, 8th December 2021. The helicopter named IAF Mi7V5 crashed in the area called Coonoor, Tamil Nadu in which a total of 14 passengers were on board out of which 13 lost their lives. The only survivor, Group Captain Varun Singh who is being medically treated for severe burns. He has been shifted to Command Hospital, Bengaluru for further medical treatment. The CDS General Bipin Rawat was the first CDS in the country. He was the General Quartet of the Army and was appointed as the first CDS of India on 30th December 2020. He took charge of the post on 1st January and served the nation selflessly with his uttermost strategy creation for building a strong defence system for India. He was born on 16th March 1958 at Pauri, Uttarakhand and later he completed his graduation in B.Sc IMA Defence from the National Defence Academy. CDS Bipin Rawat did his MPhil from Services Staff College and completed his PhD from Chaudhary Charan Singh University.
Know About the Professional Career of CDS Gen Bipin Rawat
He was given the position in the 5th Battalion of 11 Gorkha Rifles on 16th December 1978. He served the country with his determination to achieve operational excellence and further worked as a major in various assignments. CDS Bipin Rawat was promoted to the rank of Brigadier where he was posted to sector 5 of Rashtriya Rifles in Sopore. He also commanded the Chapter VII mission in the Republic of Congo. He was then promoted to the rank of major general where he handled the 19th Infantry Division in URI. Later, he handled the post of Commander General of Sothern Command in the rank of Army Commander. Then after being promoted to the post of Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army, CDS Bipin Rawat was made the 27th Chief of Staff of the Army on 17th December 2016. After his 4 years of service as a CSA, he was given the Chief of Defense Staff, CDS on 30th December 2020.

The CDS General Bipin Rawat was awarded many medals for his excellence in service- Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Yudh Seva Medal, Sena Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, Wound Medal, Samanya Seva Medal, Sainya Seva Medal and others.

On 8th December at 6.03 pm, the Indian Air Force declared the demise of CDS General, his wife Madhulika Rawat, President DWWA and 11 other people who were on board the IAF Mi7V5 chopper.
