Every year India observes October 2 as Gandhi Jayanti on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Gandhi has always been known for non-violence and non-cooperation moment, equality and not to forget "Khadi".

Khadi was promoted as a symbol of uniting 'young India'.

Taking the thought forward, Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE has asked the schools affiliated to the board to voluntarily promote a ‘khadi wearing day’ every week.

In a circular released on September 25, the board has written to the schools to encourage a 'Khadi Wearing Day' every week.
The circular is not a mandate but more of an appeal to both honour the father of the nation and also to follow on his guiding footsteps.

In the notice circulated to all its schools, the CBSE has asked to invoke Gandhi’s request for the people to wear and encourage Khadi as a means of strengthening self-reliance and sustenance to rural India. In its notice, the CBSE stated that Khadi is the heritage fabric of the country which not only provides employment to lakhs of rural artisans in the country but also promotes unity and equality.

The circular released by the CBSE read that the ‘khadi is, thus, the heritage fabric of India which not only provides employment opportunities to lakhs of rural artisans of our country but also promotes equality. Moreover, Khadi is handwoven and hand spun skin-friendly fabric that does not leave any carbon footprint.’

The board has urged schools to observe Khadi Wearing Day on a voluntary basis once a week. The schools may use khadi in their dresses, or accessories or any other way as convenient. The move is voluntary and schools may choose the way and manner in which they wish to implement the same or not.

On October 2, 2019, the country will be celebrating the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Along with suggesting the Khadi-wearing Day in schools, the CBSE has also asked the affiliated schools to organize advertising FIT India on October 2nd where participants in the run will collect plastic garbage while running.
