Every Year World Environment day is celebrated on 5th June. The purpose of this celebration is to remind everyone that our environment is a complex web of interdependent lifeforms, and to exist prosperously and sustainably we need to look not just for ourselves but for everything that exists- living and non-living.
World Environment Day was established in 1972 by the United Nations at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment to discuss the impact of human interaction with nature. Two years later, in 1974, First World Environment day was celebrated to raise awareness about environmental issues like the rising levels of Pollution, global warming, Overpopulation, wildlife crimes, etc.
48 years later, we are in a perilous situation regarding the environmental concern, as this has been clearly highlighted by the IPCC — Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The Sixth assessment report specifies how important it is to act now, or the probability of extinction-level consequences increases drastically.
This Year World Environment Day is being celebrated in Sweden with the theme- 'Only One Earth', focusing on living sustainably in harmony with nature. To accomplish the concept we have two tools: Education and awareness. Focusing on the educational aspect, in the last few year Career opportunities in the environmental field has seen exponential growth and courses related to the environment have witnessed an increasing level of interest among the millennial generation.
