Faculty members, administrative staff, officials, hostel residents and students of Jamia Millia Islamia carried out a tree plantation drive as part of the government’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
Close to 200 saplings of different varieties, including Ashoka, Gulmohar, Ficusand Kadam were planted during the drive organised by National Service Scheme (NSS) Jamia Millia Islamia.
Residents of Begum Hazrat Mahal Girls Hostel joined hands with NSS volunteers in planting saplings on October 2, which marked the finale of the Swachhta drive that commenced on September 15.
A P Siddiqui (IPS), Registrar JMI, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said that the drive undertaken by JMI not only affirms the university’s commitment to the government of India’s significant and energising concept of ‘swachhta hi sewa’ but JMI’s emphasis on a clean and green campus.
Siddiqui said that JMI has taken every step to inculcate eco-friendly and clean habits among students as they are the future generation. These habits are essential for overall wellbeing of society and will contribute to making a healthy and happy nation. Given the high level of pollution in Delhi, plantation and cleanliness drives are a must to detoxify our environment, Siddiqui said.
Among those who attended the programme included, NSS programme Coordinator, N U Khan, DSW, Naved Iqbal, chief proctor, Haroon Sajjad, dean faculty of engineering and technology, Mehtab Alam, Amir Azam, head of department of social work, Ushvinder Popli, provost girl’s hostel, Sabiha Zaidi and joint registrar, Abdul Malik.
The Swachh Bharat Mission programme was coordinator by Tokeer Ahmad, dept of chemistry along with Abid, Bharat Bhushan, Saquib Aziz AR (admin) and Iqbal Hakim AR (O&M) and staff members of departments including horticulture, sanitation and building and construction, JMI.
