St Stephen’s College To Apply For Autonomy Before UGC

Despite objections from students and faculty members, St Stephen’s College is all set to apply for autonomy before the University Grants Commission (UGC).

While St Stephen’s College principal John Varghese confirmed news, the human resource development (HRD) ministry and the UGC will soon conduct a meeting with college principals across the country in connection with the new guidelines issued to autonomous colleges. 


What UGC Guidelines for Autonomous Colleges-2017 says
An Autonomous college  will be able to determine and prescribe its own courses.
Modify syllabi to suit local needs. 
Make it skill-oriented in consonance with job requirements. 

Highlights 
The college had decided to apply for autonomy on March 25. 
Students and faculty members raised objections on the grounds that they weren’t consulted. 
HRD ministry and the UGC will soon conduct a meeting with college principals.
