Shaktikanta Das, a retired Economic Affairs Secretary, has been appointed the new governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday. The 63-year-old former bureaucrat’s appointment comes in the wake of former governor Urjit Patel’s abrupt resignation.
While Patel stepped down as governor of the RBI with immediate effect on Monday, the appointments committee of the cabinet has cleared Das’ appointment for a period of three years. The 1980-batch Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer was brought to the Finance Ministry after the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government came to power in 2014.

Das replaced Urjit Patel, who surprisingly resigned from the central bank on Monday amid growing differences with the government over a range of subjects.
Das is a history graduate from the prestigious St. Stephen's College in Delhi. He is a 1980-batch Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer.
Das was named India's G-20 Sherpa and also appointed as a member of the 15th Finance Commission.
Das oversaw the re-monetisation of the economy after the shock decision to withdraw 86 per cent of the currency in circulation in November 2016.
