Concerned about physical and mental health of students, HRD ministry has issued directives to states and union territories across the country on homework and schoolbag weight.

The fresh directives pointed out that weight of school bags should vary depending on the age and class of the students.

Weight of schoolbag

Classes  I and II
The weight of schoolbag should not exceed 1.5 kg.

Class III to V
The schoolbag weight should be less than 3 kg.

Class VI and VII
The schoolbag weight should not be more than 4 kg.

Class VIII and IX
The schoolbag weight should not be more than 4.5 kg.

Class X
The schoolbag not weigh above 5 kg .

The HRD ministry also mentioned that institutions cannot assign homework to students of classes 1 and 2. All the schools have been instructed to follow the order.

Here is what the HRD directive says
Schools should not prescribe any other subjects except language and mathematics for classes 1 and 2 and language, EVS and mathematics for classes 3 to 5 students as prescribed by the NCERT.

The reports three months after Human Resource Development or HRD ministry  announced its decision to replace the UGC with the HECI by repealing the UGC Act, 1951.

According to a draft bill, which has been placed in the public domain by the ministry to seek feedback from the stakeholders, the new commission will solely focus on academic matters.
