Jamia Minority Status Row: Govt To Withdraw Support In Court
Jamia
Mentioning minority status given to Jamia Millia Islamia an error, the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) will soon file a fresh affidavit in the writ petitions pending with the Delhi High Court.

According to an Indian Express article, the MHRD in the affidavit will state that its support for the order of the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) on February 22, 2011, declaring Jamia a religious minority institution, was an error in its understanding of the legal position.

In 2011, the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) granted minority institution status to the Jamia Millia Islamia University.

“We have no hesitation in holding that Jamia was founded by the Muslims for the benefit of the Muslims and it never lost its identity as a Muslim minority educational institution,” said the order signed by Justice M.S.A. Siddiqui, Chairman of the Commission.
