Gujarat government on Friday handed over appointment letters to 8,800 vidyasahayaks (assistant teachers) in the state.
The letters were given during functions organised at different district headquarters in the state. Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi presided over the main function held at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhingar which was telecast live at all the other venues.
"We are doing all this for the future of Gujarat, to take its development to new heights and for that education is important," Modi said in his address after handing over the appointment letters to a few of them.
"Under the guidance of a teacher, an entire generation is created, which determines how a nation's future will be. For a teacher to be successful, it is important that there is a student in him or her," Modi said.
The chief minister talked about the steps taken by the Gujarat government in the field of education.
He recalled that when he took over as the chief minister in 2001, Gujarat was lagging behind in education, "especially in the enrolment of girl students."
"We worked towards 100 per cent enrolment, where we attained success. Then we saw teachers are less, so we recruited lakhs of teachers," he said.
"One by one we were bringing changes, through manpower, budget, technology. We have worked towards strengthening education", he said.
"Now, the students who enrolled since 2001 are growing up and they are leaving their villages to study. So we allotted Rs 200 crore for building hostels across the state. Let everyone, who wants to study get the opportunity," he said.
