Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said granting autonomy to educational institutes is important for enhancing the standard of education.

"Autonomy for educational institutions is very important to bring quality to the education sector. It can bring flexibility to the institution's functioning," the CM said, speaking at a program at Shivaji Science College here.

With each university having about 500 to 700 colleges affiliated to it, it compromises the quality of education, and autonomy can be the solution to this problem, Fadnavis said.

Later, speaking at the conclusion of `Learn and Earn' program organised by Mehmuda Sanstha, another educational institute, Fadnavis said imparting skills to the youth is a great service to the country.

His government provided financial assistance of Rs 112 crore to 42,253 students from the minority communities last year, the CM said.

In the last three years, the government spent Rs 280 crore across Maharashtra for providing assistance to more than one lakh students from the minority communities, more than what the previous (Congress-led) governments had spent in nine years, the CM claimed.
