The West Bengal government on Wednesday said it would fill up college teacher vacancies this year, recruiting about 726 assistant professors in government colleges and more than 2000 assistant professors in government-aided colleges.
Stating this in the Assembly, Partha Chatterjee, higher education minister, said that in addition the process of recruiting around 200 principals in government-aided colleges would also be completed in this financial year.
He he said that the recruitment rules for these posts had been notified and the recruitment was being done through Public Service Commission and West Bengal College Service Commission.

This infusion of nearly 3000 fresh appointments will help improve the standards of teaching in colleges and universities, Chatterjee said.
For scientifically planning the spread of higher education, the department is utilising a web-based GIS map, the minister said.
It will have parameters like census data, number of class XII schools running in the vicinity and number of colleges within 10 km in difficult areas.

Replying to a question on the practice of management quota in private colleges, he said that under the government's policy they will have to cross-subsidise seats for poor students.
