Sarva Siksha Abhiyan brings down school dropout rate
School dropout has declined from 80 lakh in 2009 to 30 lakh in 2012 due to the success of the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan programme, the government said today.

The net enrolment ratio at the primary level has also jumped to 99.8 per cent since the launch of the ambitious scheme.

"The scheme alongwith other initiatives of the government including mid-day meal has helped in checking dropouts of kids, particularly the girl child," a government statement said.

The scheme is a flagship programme of the central government for achieving universalization of elementary education in a time-bound manner.

Since its inception, more than 1.95 lakh primary schools and more than one lakh upper primary schools have been sanctioned, while 20 lakh teaching posts were sanctioned.

Besides, close to 3.60 lakh girls are studying in over 3,500 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas under the scheme.
