In a move to check cheating in its examinations through mobile phones, Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (HPPSC) has installed ''jammers'' in examination hall to insulate it from any outside contact.
The jammers were installed on Sunday and their effectiveness and efficacy was successfully tested, Chairman of HPPSC KS Tomar said, adding that the jammers were purchased through HP State Electronics Development Corporation.
The move was initiated after 34 candidates were caught using mobile phones during the written test of Combined Graduate Level Examination-2013 and investigations were handed over to police, Tomar said.
Keeping in view the technologically advanced cheating methods adopted by candidates with the help of mobile phones hidden in their garments and the leads stitched to the garments making them undetectable, the chairman convened a meeting on January 1, 2014 and decided to introduce mobile jammers on an experimental basis to check their frequency, range and viability.
Resultantly, the commission installed mobile jammers in the examination halls on the premises on an experimental basis for the examination of Special Class Railway Apprentices held today, Tomar said.
The Commission has also taken up the matter with the state government to purchase mobile jammers in order to eliminate cheating through high-tech means and malpractices during examination for which the government has agreed in principle, he said.
A proposal is being sent shortly to the government for providing adequate budget to purchase mobile jammers so that they can be installed in each and every examination hall.
The commission has decided to purchase mobile jammers before the forthcoming HP Administrative Service (Main) Examination.
