"Despite the 20% grace marks, our overall pass percentage dropped by 10 percentage points. The CM was very upset with our department and strongly instructed us not to continue with it [grace marks]," Bangarappa told the reporters during a press conference at Vidhana Soudha.
According to various media reports, the controversy emerged following the KSEAB's decision to raise the grace marks from 10% to 20% for all subjects in the 2023-2024 academic year. This change was implemented after the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exam results revealed a low pass rate of 54%, which improved to 74% with the inclusion of the 20% grace marks. The initial introduction of the 10% grace marks aimed to mitigate learning deficits resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic; however, this rationale has since diminished in significance.
