The online petition seeking the shelving of the GATE Exam reads, "With the arrival of the third wave, the Omicron variant of Covid-19 is spreading rapidly in several states and cities. A number of studies, including the one conducted by IIT Kanpur have predicted that the third wave is going to be at its peak in the early week of February 2022 and will come to a halt by April. Thus, the peak of Covid-19 cases is highly prone to be clashing with the usual exam dates on which the GATE exam has been scheduled for."
It further stated that if the GATE exam is not deferred, the candidates appearing for the examination are at a higher risk of contracting Covid-19 ailment and could act as Covid super-spreaders, thereby posing a threat to themselves as well as others.
The candidates have demanded the postponement of exams in view of the examinees' safety, especially during this time when the highly transmissible Omicron variant is wreaking havoc in the country. The link to the petition is mentioned below.
