Before permitting Mathematics in Class XI, the school head will assess the student's ability and aptitude for studying Mathematics. Starting from the next session, 2024-25, Mathematics can only be pursued in Class XI after completing Standard Mathematics in Class X. CBSE has sent a letter to all school heads, requesting that they provide information regarding this to the students and teachers.
CBSE had introduced the provision of studying Mathematics in Class XI even after studying Basic Mathematics in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This system has been in place for the past two years. CBSE has decided to continue this arrangement for the academic session 2023-24 as well.
CBSE has clarified that this relaxation is applicable only for this session. From the following session onwards, only those students who have studied Standard Mathematics in Class X will be allowed to pursue Mathematics in Class XI. Students studying Basic Mathematics in Class X will have the option to study Applied Mathematics.
Prior to the COVID-19 period, only students who studied Standard Mathematics in Class X were eligible to study Mathematics in Class XI. It is noteworthy that in Class X, students had to choose either Basic Mathematics or Standard Mathematics. As per the pre-pandemic board system, students who did not intend to study Mathematics beyond tenth grade were required to opt for Basic Mathematics, while those who wished to continue studying Mathematics in Class XI-XII were required to choose Standard Mathematics.
