Today President Ramnath Kovind will confer the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. People to get honoured with these awards are India’s 13th President, Pranab Mukherjee, Social activist and politician Late Shri Nanaji Deshmukh and eminent singer Bhupen Hazarika.
Bharat Ratna is awarded to those people who give significant contribution in the field of art, literature, sports, public services.
The award was observed in January 1954 by India’s first President Dr Rajendra Prasad. While Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was the first person to get honoured with Bharat Ratna.
