Higher education is investment for country: Ex-CSIR chief
The future of any country depends on its educational development, said Dr Raghunath Mashelkar, former director general of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, here on Wednesday.

He delivered the 54th convocation address at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University here this evening.

The countrymen have got right to education, but we must think now if we are getting the "right" education, he said.

For a country like India with its large youth population, higher education and skilled youth was an investment, he said.

Higher education had not penetrated in India to the desirable degree, and more central universities, IIMs and IITs would be needed in future, Dr Mashelkar said.

Also, quality education should be made affordable for the ordinary person, he said.

Vice-Chancellor VM Pandhripande was present on the occasion, where 107 candidates were bestowed with PhDs. Some eight thousand students received degrees.
