Gujral, while raising the issue of the college administration's proposed move to rename the evening college of the institution as Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya in Parliament yesterday, said, "To change the name of a minority institution is a direct assault on the feelings of Sikhs...I feel this is something to be condemned."
HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said the decision to change the name of the college was not the government's decision and had been put on hold.
"Dyal Singh Evening College is not a minority college.
The SAD MP has misled the Parliament. It is a secular college as per its preamble, framed by late Dyal Singh and it is completely owned and managed by Delhi University now," governing body chairman Amitabh Sinha said in a statement.
Gujral said in Parliament that philanthropist Dyal Singh Majithia had given his entire savings and life to the cause of education and set up several colleges and schools.
