The government has sanctioned 19.82 lakh teachers posts to various states and union territories under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan programme.
Government has also requested state governments to expedite recruitment of teachers as well as carry out the redeployment of existing teachers, a press release said.This was aimed at ensuring pupil-teacher ratio as laid down under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act 2009, in all schools.
The Centre has also sanctioned a Rs 6,300 crore project to strengthen teacher education in the country in the 12th Plan. The National Council of Teacher Education has given permission to state governments for training of the over five lakh untrained teachers through distance mode, it said.
