Functional English will now be treated as Elective English in all affiliated schools across the country. The change will be effective for Class XII from this academic session and for Class XI in the new academic session (2015-16).

This change may come as relief for the aspirants seeking admission in Delhi University. The students have to face difficulties in admission due to this programme.

Academic Research, Training and Innovation Director of CBSE, Dr. Sadhna Parashar has issued notification regarding this.

The Board  last year had revised the syllabus of Functional English and the revised course has been implemented for Class XII students in new academic session. After revising the syllabus the name of this course has also been changed.

Delhi University for admission in 2014-15 academic session had deducted 2.5 per cent from the aggregate marks of those aspirants of the four-year under graduate course who had opted for Functional English as an elective subject in their class XII exams.

After scrapping Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP), Delhi University had allowed Functional English as Core English and the marks obtained in the exam were added in aggregate marks.
