West Bengal: Singur movement will be introduced in school syllabus from this year

West Bengal education minister Partha Chaterjee onMonday announced that Singur movement will be introduced in the History syllabus of schools run by the State government.

“It’s a historic win for the farmers. Along with theSingur movement, the Tebhaga movemement and Krishak Andolan will also featurein the syllabus,” Chatterjee told reporters.

 

About Singur Andolan

The much-awaited and discussed Singur land case wassettled by the Supreme Court in September last year asking the state governmentto return 997 acres of land to farmers, who are the original owners, in 12weeks' time. The landmark verdict said the land acquisition by then Leftgovernment did not follow the rules laid by the Land Acquisition Act 1894,which has now been replaced by a new law in 2013.

It was the Singur land agitation that had propelledMs. Mamata into the political dominance in West Bengal.
