The University Grants Commission (UGC) pulled up deemed to be universities for attaching the suffix university although they still did not have university status.
While five deemed universities have been given an ultimatum by the UGC to immediately discontinue the word 'university' with their name, Christ University, Jain University, and Yenepoya University have been asked to apply for an alternative name by 4 pm on Thursday.
The move comes days after issued notice to several institutions for using the suffix ‘university’ despite being deemed universities.
The UGC had earlier sent a letter to all 123 deemed universities twice, on November 10 and November 13, giving them 15 days to stop using the term, reports scroll.in.
The Section 23 of the UGC, 1956, clearly mentions, “No institution, whether a corporate body or not, other than a University established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, a Provincial Act or a State Act shall be entitled to have the word 'University' associated with its name in any manner whatsoever."
