NIT Admission: HRD Ministry Likely To Increase Seats For Women

In an effort to improve female enrolment in National Institute of Technology (NIT), the HRD Ministry is mulling to introduce more seats for women from the upcoming academic year. 

While the report comes after the declining trend of female students taking admission in NIT, only 13 per cent female candidates reportedly took admission in NITs. 

However, NITs have witnessed a 9 per cent dip in the female candidates’ admission to the premiere institutions. 

Highlights 
Total Number of NITs in India: 31 
In 2016, 3,900 female students had taken admission which has come down to 2,500 this year. 

About NIT 
According to Wikipedia, NITs are autonomous public institutes of higher education, located in India. They are governed by the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, which declared them as institutions of national importance alongside Indian Institutes of Technology. These institutes of national importance receive special recognition from the Government of India.
