NEET age limit row: SC to announce final verdict on March 31
New Delhi

The Supreme Court will announce the final verdict in connection with the age restriction for students appearing for National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2017.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had earlier notified NEET 2017 will be counted as the first attempt, following protests from medical students against the rule that candidates will only get three attempts.
While the decision was taken during UGC meeting in the national capital last month, it was also decided that candidates appearing for NEET exam should be between 17 and 25 years old.

However, the Medical Council of India had decided to remove age restriction for candidates appearing for NEET.

“The oversight committee felt such limitations will reduce the number of doctors in the country. The Union Health Ministry agreed and suggested recommendation to us. We have passed it,” MCI vice-president Dr CV Bhirmanandham said.

As per regulations framed under the Indian Medical Council Act-1956 as amended in 2016 and the Dentists Act-1948 as amended in 2016, NEET(UG)-2017 will be conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), for admission to MBBS/BDS Courses in India in Medical/Dental Colleges run with the approval of Medical Council of India/Dental Council of India under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India except for the institutions established through an Act of Parliament e.g. AIIMS and JIPMER Puducherry.
