Nearly 450 sanitation worker positions vacant in SDMC
Around 450 positions of sanitation workers are vacant in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation despite the civic body having launched a huge cleanliness drive in the city in line with the "Swachh Bharat Mission".

The matter was on Monday raised in the Standing Committee meet of the SDMC with its chairman Subhash Arya claiming that the posts would be filled up soon.

"Yes, we do have 448 positions lying vacant for sanitation workers but we wish to hire people for them soon. The vacancies have been there for the last one-and-a-half year," Arya said.

"But, we will fill up the posts in next two weeks," he claimed.

However, a senior official of the civic body said "hiring such workers in such a short period of time while satisfying all the hiring criteria would be difficult." The vacancies are for substitutes and not for the permanent positions, he added.

SDMC has a total strength of about 21,000 sanitation workers (falling under Grade D employee), out of which close to 16,000 are on the civic body's roll. Rest such employees are for temporary positions or contract-basis.

"The shortfall of 448 came out when a monthly assessment as done recently to find out how many workers are there and how many were needed," the official said.

A recent inspection, conducted last year had revealed a lack of sanitation staff in a majority of SDMC schools.

Deputy South Delhi Mayor Parveen Rana had then said that he had requested the Commissioner and the corporation to take urgent action to hire sanitation workers so that a clean environment may be ensured for the 3.43 lakh children studying in its schools.

Among other sanitation issues, Arya said, "SDMC has already acquired 1,200 new dustbins out of the 5,000 planned to be put up in all its four zones.” “We have started installing the 1,200 dustbins in the market areas in our four zones, rest would come soon," he said.
