India’s former president Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s birthday is celebrated as teacher’s day.
Dr Radhakrishnan has given 40 years of his life to education.
He believed that the education can transform the world.
Subhash Chandra Kundu from West Bengal has a similar belief.
Subhash was earlier a part of the Naxalite movement, from past 30 years he is teaching physics to the unprivileged children and is not charging any money for it.
Today, on the occasion of Teachers day, we salute and thank him for being such a great teacher and inspiration to all of us.
Influenced by Dr BR Ambedkar
Subhash from Basirhat left the Naxalite movement and started his journey towards teaching. He is very much influenced by Dr BR Ambedkar’s values.
In 1988 Kudu bought a land and made an institute of Physics in which there are six rooms, two are used as classrooms and others are used as laboratories.
Where coaching institutes are charging a lot of fees, Kundu is being an idol for many children of Basirhat. Many of the children have got admissions in IIT’s and St. Xavier's College.
The saying is true “Not all superheroes wear capes”, Subhash Chandra Kundu is a perfect example and a great inspiration.
In a recent interview done by The Telegraph, Subhash said “I have only one motto that science education should be given to every child, especially to those who can’t afford education. I cannot take the tuition fee from these children; science can take them further and will give them a living”.
In his interview with The Telegraph Kundu said, “From 1968 to 1971 I was very active in politics, that time I was studying in Basirhat College. We have done a lot of mistakes during the Naxalite movement. In 1947 I was released by Dum Dum Correctional Centre, then I decided not go on the similar path but pursued the path of knowledge, the path of science education. Since then I decided that I will spread science education among the poor.”
Before setting up the institute, as a teacher at Basirhat High School.
Kundu believes that his modest salary as a government teacher was enough to sustain him, and following retirement, he relies on his pension. He also thanks generous contributions from former students and well-wishers, the institute has grown over the past three decades.
10 years earlier, Kundu got a Cerebral Stroke and a paralysis attack, despite that he continued his work and undertook many activities related to science.
Subhash Chandra Kudu is a great example of a great teacher which everyone should have. It is an encouragement to all of those students who want to become a teacher one day.
Happy teacher’s day!
