With decrease in the number of women students taking admission in Indian Institute of Technology, a panel has recommended 20 % reservation for female students in IITs.
The recommendation comes following two percent dip in the number of girls who cleared Joint Entrance Examination or JEE (Advanced) in 2016 as compared to 2015.
While media reports confirmed that the recommendation of the committee will be taken up in the meeting of the joint admission board (JAB), the officials will decide whether the reservation will be implemented from this academic session or next year.
The JAB has set up a sub-committee under the chairmanship of professor Timothy Gonsalves to explore ways to increase enrolment of female students in IITs, according to reports.
In a bid to avail the reserved seats, the candidate should need to be in the top 20 percentile in their board examinations.
Depending on available facilities, the number of reserved seats will be ultimately taken by individual IITs.
However, the number of seats for male students will not be affected.
Admission procedure
The JEE (Advanced) is a common admission test for students seeking admission to undergraduate programmes of all IITs across the country. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or GATE is an all India Examination conducted by all the IITs and IISC to identify meritorious and motivated candidates for admission to Post Graduate programmes in Engineering, Technology, Architecture and Pharmacy at National level.
