West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate St Xavier’s University in Kolkata on July 8.

“The university and its Rajarhat campus will be inaugurated will be inaugurated on July 8,” said Father Felix Raj.

He reiterated that steel magnate Lakshmi Niwas Mittal will also be present on the occasion.

While the university will offer six courses, around 650 students will enroll in the first academic session.

“I shall extend the help for meeting the annual pay package for educational purpose,” CM Banerjee said while inaugurating Christmas programme organized by St Xavier’s College (Calcutta) Alumni Association last year.

St Xavier’s College received the university status. It was a graduate and undergraduate college in Kolkata. It was founded by Henri Depelchin in 1860. It is named after St. Francis Xavier, a Naverre Jessuit of the 16th century, who ministered in India.

In 2006, St Xavier’s College became the first autonomous college in West Bengal. The college became a full university through the St. Xavier’s University Bill passed on December 16, 2016 by the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
