The University Grants Commission (UGC) is all set to start inviting applications this week from colleges and varsities seeking Institutions of Eminence (IoE) Tag.
While the UGC is preparing the final draft for creating 20 world-class universities, the IoE should have complete flexibility in fixing of curriculum and syllabus.
Higher Education Secretary K K Sharma informed media that the application window will remain open for three months.
However, the government has been focusing on creating 20 world class institutions.
“The process for setting up of institutions of eminence gets underway from 13 September with the invitation for applications.
The institutions which can apply are divided into three categories – existing government educational institutions, existing private higher educational institutions and sponsoring organization for setting up of private institutions,” Sharma,
told reporters.

The UGC has the unique distinction of being the only grant-giving agency in the country which has been vested with two responsibilities: that of providing funds and that of coordination, determination and maintenance of standards in institutions of higher education.
The UGC's mandate includes:
Promoting and coordinating university education.
Determining and maintaining standards of teaching, examination and research in universities.
Framing regulations on minimum standards of education.
Monitoring developments in the field of collegiate and university education; disbursing grants to the universities and colleges.
