To mark its Golden Jubilee Celebrations, the much sought after Department of Social Work, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) today organised a four-day long festival showcasing a plethora of programmes that included academic, cultural and sport events.
Inaugurating the festival, SEHER-2017, Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, JMI congratulated the Department on its success over the last five decades.
He said that the high quality of teaching and training at the department can be ascertained from the excellence that the alumni have achieved in their field both nationally and internationally.
He said that the alumni from the department have brought JMI good name and have made the university proud.
The final day of the programme will bring together partnering organizations and alumni of the 50-year old department.
Ahmad reminded the students the importance of time management and the need to strike a balance between academic and extra-curricular activities.
Ushvinder Kaur Popli, Head of the Dept of Social Work said that the youth festival got an overwhelming response from various schools of Social Work in Delhi and NCR.
She informed the gathering that the festival has garnered enthusiastic participation from students and faculty from the Dept. of Social Work, Delhi University, Dept. of Social Work, Aditi Mahavidyalay, Dept of Social Work, Dr B R Ambedkar College, Dept of Social Work, Amity University, Gautam Buddha University, NOIDA and BPS Mahila Vishvavidyalay, Sonipat.
A seminar and a debate competition have been organised as part of academic events on the first day of the festival. Relay race, badminton and cricket matches will take place on October 5 which will be followed by poster-making, rangoli, photography, face-painting, street play and ad-mag competitions on day three of the festival.
An NGO and a health mela in association with the Faculty of Dentistry, Ansari Health Centre and the Centre for Physiotherapy, JMI have been planned for the concluding day. The health mela will also feature free health check-ups and Hepatitis-B vaccination.
JMI's Department of Social Work has been at the forefront of academic innovations, research and community development programs in the country.
The graduates of the department have made their presence felt in several domains of the social sector as well as in the industry.
The UGC recognized the Department as a Centre for Advanced Study (CAS) in Social Work in 2010 and at present, it is in the Phase-II of CAS. Currently, the Department offers postgraduate, doctoral and post-doctoral programs in the disciplines of social work, human resource management and public health.
