Schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) have been urged to set up a Swachhata Ambassador Committee (SAC), in a fresh attempt to put forward the Swachh Bharat, Swachh Vidyalaya programme  which is expected to lay down guidelines to maintain cleanliness and hygiene.

According to a report by the Hindu, most schools are planning to entrust this responsibility to their student leaders and class representatives.

Committees are supposed to get teachers and students to monitor cleanliness and hygiene in the institution. CBSE also plans to send a toolkit containing a list of instructions to help the SAC function effectively. In January, schools were asked to administer a swachhata pledge during the assembly and promise to keep their surroundings clean.

According to report many schools have already appointed the committee about a year ago.

According to J. Anantha Padamanabhan, principal, Kendriya Vidyalaya, M.G. Railway Colony, the committee comprises two teachers and six students. Besides this, each class has a cleanliness monitor to ensure that the classroom is kept clean.

"Members of the committee go all around the campus three times a day and report to the teacher at the end of every day. If there is a need to set anything right, they talk to the housekeeping staff and ensure that it is done," he said.
