In a significant decision, the BJP government in Haryana on Thursday decided to do away with holding interview in police recruitment process and select candidates purely on the basis of merit, a step aimed at ending corruption and bring transparency in selection process.

"With a view to ensure transparency in police recruitment, provide jobs purely on the basis of merit and eliminate corruption, it has been decided to do away with the system of interview in such recruitment," Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Thursday.

"Recruitments in police would be held only through written and physical tests," Khattar said while reviewing functioning of Home Department at a meeting with Additional Chief Secretary(Home) Roshan Lal, Director General Police S N Vashisth and other senior police officers here on Thursday, an official release said here.

Ahead of Assembly polls, BJP had vowed to show zero tolerance to corruption and bring transparency in jobs.

The Chief Minister stressed that communal harmony be maintained at all cost and emphasis should be laid on ensuring the safety of members belonging to weaker sections of the society and the women.

There is a need to check crime against women with a firm hand, he added.

While reviewing the system to redress grievances, the Chief Minister said that grievances of the people should be redressed promptly and each complainant should be given a receipt of having received his or her complaint in writing.

The Chief Minister expressed concerns over the incident in which two students of North-East were beaten up in Gurgaon recently and directed the officers to ensure that such incidents were not repeated.

"People hailing from North-East should be integrated with the main stream and they should not feel isolated, especially in Gurgaon," he said.

Khattar said a new programme "Vasudev Kutumbkum - Mera Desh-Mera Parivar" would be launched soon with the support of non-governmental organizations to strengthen national integration.
