Vice President Hamid Ansari on Wednesday released a book titled ''History as a Site of Struggle”, by noted historian Professor K N Panikkar here.

Speaking on the occasion, Ansari said historians have sought to analyse and understand the dynamics of social interaction in different societies.

“The volume of collection of papers and articles Panikkar has written over years reinforce his position as an outstanding public intellectual of our times.” “This tome of over 650 pages does not have to be read at one go, instead it has to be taken piece by piece, essay by essay, each morsel relished and carefully digested,” Ansari said.

The volume comprises Panikkars essays and articles, published over a period of three decades and more.

The book is divided into five sections: history and historiography, national politics, communal politics, education and culture, the essays in the different sections bound together by the idea of resistance to colonialism and concern for secularism and democracy.

Earlier, the Vice President unveiled a statue of freedom fighter Annie Mascarene at Vazhuthacad in the city. Ansari said Annie Mascarene was a role model of women empowerment in the country. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy was among those present.
