A 23-year-old student of the Jawaharlal Nehru University ( JNU) in New Delhi attacked a woman classmate with a sharp object on the campus and later attempted suicide, a police officer said on Wednesday.

The incident was reported at around 11.30 am in room number 213 of the School Of Languages.

Both were immediately rushed to different hospitals.

"The accused was taken to Safdarjung Hospital and the woman was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). We have recovered a country made pistol, a bottle of poisonous substance and an axe from the spot," a senior police officer said.

According to the officer, the accused attacked the woman with a sharp object, leaving several injuries on her body. He later slit his own throat and also consumed a poisonous substance.
