India is all set to become the next superpower in open education and skills, believes the CEO of National Skill Development Corporation, Dilip Chenoy.

“With the world''s largest schooling and higher education infrastructures in open and distance learning system, the future of India''s learning and development is obviously in the open space,” Chenoi said during his Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) foundation day lecture here.

“India will be the next superpower in open education and skills,” he said, even as he called for the education system to be designed in such a way that each graduate passes out with some certified vocational skills.

The above is “possible through a blended system that effectively combines open learning with vocational training and skill development programmes. For this, there is need to leverage the potential of institutions like IGNOU and NIOS,” he added.

Chenoi also stressed on the need for greater public- private collaboration and global partnerships at a time when industries are looking for entrepreneurs and business leaders to come up from institutions like IGNOU.

IGNOU Vice-Chanellor M Aslam and AICTE chairman SS Mantha were also present on the occasion.
