Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today called for improvement in quality of education, human resources, working conditions and infrastructure to transform Guwahati University into a front-ranking institute of the world.

In an interaction with the newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Guwahati University, Dr Mridul Hazarika, Gogoi underscored the need to upgrade the status of the university and to enter into collaborations with foreign universities.

“Although infrastructure is important, it alone cannot upgrade the status of the university. There is the need to tie up with the foreign varsities to transform Guwahati University into a front-ranking institute in the world,” he added.

The chief minister emphasised the need to introduce fresh subjects in the curriculum that are in great demand and called for intercultural exchange with other universities, besides roping in learned professors from abroad during vacation for better exchanges.

The Vice Chancellor apprised the Chief Minister about the urgent need to repair the hostels, classrooms and roads and requested him to the immediate release of Rs 20 crore out of the total project cost submitted to the Government.

Gogoi assured the Vice Chancellor that the amount would be released for the greater interests of the students and teachers'' fraternity.
