With Delhi University rolling back its controversial four-year undergraduate programme, celebrations broke out in the campus on Friday as students and teachers danced, burst fire crackers and sang songs.
Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA), ABVP, NSUI, SFI, KYS and others, who had been carrying out a long-drawn-out protest against the four-year course, celebrated their "victory" and thanked the University Grants Commission (UGC) for intervening in the matter.
"The DUTA congratulates the teachers, students and karmacharis of Delhi University for the historic and united struggle because of which vice chancellor Dinesh Singh had to yield and agree to implement the rule of law as mandated by the Delhi University and the UGC Acts of Parliament," DUTA's President Nandita Narain said in a statement.
She said the university community had been fighting for more than a year against the "unacademic and illegal" FYUP.
"We expect that immediate guidelines will be issued to colleges to publish the pre-FYUP courses on their website along with the number of seats per course.
"Emergency staff council meetings should be convened at the earliest and cut-offs announced based on past experience without inviting fresh applications," she added.
Several student bodies, including ABVP and NSUI, also celebrated the roll back of FYUP by dancing on the beats of drums and bursting crackers.
"It is the victory of students. We also thank UGC, which actively played its role to force VC to rollback of FYUP. We want university administration to immediately start admission process under three-year undergraduate programme," ABVP's national secretary Rohit Chahal said.
NSUI congratulated its members and students for "coming out victorious" in its fight against the FYUP.
Colleges await DU decision to go ahead with admissions
"We hope that the University now begins the long-awaited process of admission," NSUI spokesperson Amrish Pandey said.
DU on Friday scrapped its FYUP and reverted to the previous three-year structure as per the directive of the UGC
