Gujarat: Governor O P Kohli clears Higher Education Council Bill

New Delhi

Seeking to curtail the authority of vice-chancellors, Governor O P Kohli gave the final nod to Gujarat Higher EducationCouncil Bill 2016 on Friday.

While the bill will bring all the universities ofthe state under the ambit of a Higher Education Council, the Democratic Students Organistaion (DSO) was the first to oppose it.

The DSO also sent a memorandum to education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasdama on Saturday and alleged that the bill is against the autonomyof academic institutions.

Meanwhile, the teaching and non-teaching staff ofGujarat Universities and other universities in the state demanded roll back of the bill.

Highlights

Higher Education Council Bill was introduced by the then state minister for higher and technical education Vasuben Trivedi in theAnandiben Patel government.

The Democratic Students Organistaion (DSO) was thefirst to oppose it.
