Government on Saturday initiated a process to review the selection process for recruitment of teachers in view of large number of vacancies in centrally funded institutes.
A committee has been set up under former UGC chairman Arun Nigavekar to evaluate PhD-NET qualifications for appointment of teachers and to accordingly suggest a policy for selections.
As per the UGC guidelines of 2009, National Eligibility Test (NET) or State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) are the minimum eligibility conditions for appointment of assistant professors in colleges and universities.
Guidelines were also enforced for PhD qualifications to be eligible for recruitment as teachers.
The committee will also take into consideration the problems and issues related to ad-hoc and contractual appointments in central universities and would recommend to resolve them.
It has been asked to submit its report within two months.
Besides, it would evaluate the Academic Performance Indicator (API) Scheme as regards the entry point and career advancement of teachers by taking into account its criticism and suggest suitable improvements/alternatives, said a government statement.

The decision came as a section of PhD aspirants who were affected by the 2009 guidelines, met HRD Minister Smriti Irani earlier in the day, who assured the students of all support.
The committee was constituted keeping in mind the larger public interest of attracting and retaining talented and quality manpower and selection of the most meritorious to the teaching profession, the statement added.
