Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies has planned a slew of new programmes in research and education sector, including setting up of a Centre of Excellence in Marine Biotechnology and Marine Bioprocessing, State Fisheries Minister K Babu told the Assembly on Monday.
An amount of Rs 20 crore is estimated to be the cost of the new Centre, Babu said, replying to a calling attention on the development plans of the University.
An Animal Health Management Laboratory has been planned with a total investment of Rs 56 lakh in association with National Fisheries Development Board, he said.
A Study Centre to facilitate advance researches in climate change would be set up, he said, adding, it would help meet challenges faced by fisherfolk living on the coastal belt due to climate change.
Stating that climate change had resulted in drastic decline of indigenous fish species, he said out of 200 fresh water fish, 24 have disappeared. In ocean wealth out of 240 species, 30 have found to be extinct.
A Marine Innovation Zone and Industry Incubation Centre is planned to be set up in association with Kerala Industrial Development Corporation, he said, adding, a Community Radio Station and Fish Tech Portal is also planned to be set up in the University.
